What is Homeopathy? Homeopathy is a system of
medicine based on the principle that Provings and Materia Medica A controlled experiment in which a medicine (remedy) is administered to a healthy individual to ascertain what changes (signs, symptoms, behaviour) the medicine (remedy) produces on the body and the mind is called a “proving." The term “proving”, as used by Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of Homeopathy, refers to one trial with a single individual (only humans, never animals). Many such provings are required to fully test the powers of a medicinal substance. The homeopathic materia medica, which constitutes hundreds of scholarly texts, is a culmination of 200 years of provings and their synthesis into a working system of medicine. Homeopathic Medicine has a vast body of scientific literature in the form of provings. In time, to make the materia medica more accessible, repertories were created. A repertory is adictionary of symptoms in alphabetical order, where each symptom is followed by the remedies known to cause that symptom in the provings (materia medica).
