Psoriasis and Homeopathy
by Nishant Babusenan

Psoriasis is one of the most prevalent and tenacious dermatological ailments in the world yet it can be managed successfully with non toxic homeopathic medications. Psoriasis is a non-infectious, inflammatory disease of the skin and the major abnormality of this condition is due to increased epidermal proliferation due to excessive division of cells in the skin’s basal layer. Biochemical changes in the epidermis like increased levels of prostaglandins, leukotrienes and hydroxyeicosatetaenoic (HETE) acids can lead to exacerbation of the psoriatic condition. It may start at any age but it is rare below the age of 10. Psoriasis can be hereditary and a child with one affected parent (psoriatic parent) has a 15 % chance of developing the disease and this increases to 50 % if both parents are affected.

The cause of psoriasis may vary from person to person. Stress and anxiety can play a role in psoriatic exacerbation, for instance a parent who has lost his son in an accident can go through depression, develop high blood pressure, insomnia and/or psoriasis. A recent study also indicated that throat infections caused by streptococcal bacteria is associated with psoriasis.

The look of psoriasis is similar despite different causative factors. Symptoms such as constant dryness, peeling skin, itching with bleeding are the most common. The itching can become very severe when the affected part is exposed to sunlight, detergents and other house hold chemicals. Psoriatic patches usually appear on the scalp, nails, flexures (natal cleft, sub mammary and axillary folds), palms and the groin.

Patients usually approach their doctors at a very late stage of the disease, and are administered anti fungal creams and local corticosteroids. In turn, the skin may become very sensitive and thin as such types of creams will bring brief relief to the patient but they only suppress the symptoms. Suppressing it only causes it to be driven deeper within and can later rebound into a severe form which can delay the cure. Thus psoriasis can be treated much faster if it’s diagnosed early.

Homeopathy is a system of medicine which helps to alleviate the patients suffering from chronic skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, lichen planus, fungal infections etc without producing side effects. It helps by matching one’s symptoms to a particular medicine thus two people with psoriasis may receive different remedies.Homeopaths spend a great deal of time taking one’s case to ascertain the root cause of the condition, physical or psychological expression, and noting their unique symptoms. Thereafter a specific constitutional medicine is selected for that patient’s unique needs. For example, some patients will have itching in the night, morning, during menstruation (females), during sleep, during perspiration and so on. This individualized care helps to cure the symptoms of the patient. The duration of treatment completely depends on the type of medication, food habits of the patient during treatment, extent of spread of the skin condition, mental state of the patient etc. Psoriasis if left untreated can lead to complications like, psoriatic arthritis, insomnia, and cosmetic defects.

Aside from setting up an appointment with your homeopath, here are some useful tips:

  • Be sure to limit your scratching.
  • Keep your skin moisturized with liberal applications of coconut oil or plain moisturising cream since it helps tp keep the skin proliferation and dryness under control.
  • Be sure to consume adequate amounts of water and use mild body soaps to keep your skin from drying out.
  • Be sure to avoid chemicals such as skin bleach, and hair dyes during the course of homeopathic treatment so that it can give rapid gentle and permanent restoration of the skin.
